Bolen Bevel
A Florida point type, Early archaic. Small to large in size
the Bolen as it is called in Florida has several ground basal
configurations. Lumpers are happy with the one name, but
splitters of point types according to shape could have a field
day with this one. Expanded notched, corner notched, side
notched, small base, large base, serrated and non-serrated can
give some collectors mixed emotions as to what they may have.
Other states have split the type with names like Lost Lake,
Big Sandy, Cache River, Thebes, E-Notch and Dovetail to name a
few. Serrated examples for the most part are resharpened point or
knives. By using the alternate bevel sharpening process material
is conserved and the point/knife last twice as long as an example
with double beveling. Made of raw chert, coral and even
quartz the classic Bolen is favored by collectors and
modern knappers.
