SHUMLA
GENRAL DESCRIPTION : This is
a medium size point that has basal notches and a short, straight contracting
stem. The blade is triangular with short to convex basal edges. Basal notches
are V-shaped and in wide points produce squared barbs. Resharpened examples
may have pointed to round barbs. The stem contracts slightly and has a
truncated to slightly rounded basal edge. The Shumla point was named by Dee
Ann Suhm , Alex D. Krieger and Edward B. Jelks { 1954 : 480 } for examples
found in Sothwest Texas.
AGE AND CULTURE : Archaic of
the round rock phase, dating between 2,250 B.C. and 650 B.C.
DISTRIBUTION : In the area
of the Pecos and Rio Grande rivers of west Texas, and extending into the Big
Bend part of the Rio Grande and the adjacent part of Mexico.
