Florida Cypress Creek
A Florida point type, named after Cypress creek in Hillsborough co. Fl. (Son Anderson 1984). A middle archaic point/knife type found associated with Thonotosassa, Florida Hamilton (stemmed) and Wills points. The Wills type is a local type found in the Tampa Bay area, named after the Melvin Wills site near Thonotosassa Fl., (on the west end of Harney flats) The Cypress Creek exhibits an ovate blade, barbed, sometimes one sharp, one rounded barb with a pointed to round contracting stem. Florida has been added to the name since 1984 to save confusion with other Cypress Creek types. Made of heat altered materials, usually of local cherts and Miocene corals. This type is found in the west central Fl. area, especially in Hillsborough, Pasco, Pinellas, Polk and Hernando counties. Most examples are well made and may approach 5 inches in length. Exhausted examples with sharp barbs and pointed stems could resemble the Fl. Hillsborough type. Key, exhausted Hillsborough points have been re-sharpened from tip of point to tip of barbs. On exhausted Cypress Creek points re-sharpening usually stops before approaching tip of the barbs, the unsharpened portion of blade can even appear ground.
