Alachua

Description:  A Florida point type, Named after Alachua co. Fl. (pronounced alachuway
by the locals),(Bullen 1975) Not common, the Alachua is a subtype of the
Florida Archaic Stemmed.

A middle archaic point with an ovate blade,
horizonal shoulders and parallel sided squared off stem. The Alachua type is not as desirable to collectors because

of it's non-classic shape, and some of the archaic stemmed points may have just turned out like the

Alachua shape when the ancient knapper may have had a Marion or Levy in mind.

Heat altered cherts and corals were used resulting in some nice colors.

Careful, a common practice is to type any point with parallel sided stem as an alachua. See Putnam, Levy and Marion.

Age and Culture:
Associated with Late Archaic to Late Woodland Sites

Distribution: Eastern to Southeastern States
