Flint Ridge Moss Agate

Often confused with Knife River of the Dakotas, Moss agate is often transparent, has the same colors and quality. All colors of Moss agate can occur, but the most common are hues of Blue, grey, pink red and browns. Quality is high, with a slick surface, glassy texture. Under magnification, you can see what appears to be fine strands of moss in the material, hence the name. The Moss Agate type is found mainly at the western edge of Flint Ridge (Licking Co., Ohio). There have been pits found 10 - 20 feet deep that the Amerinds quarried to get to this high quality material. This type is very translucent with fossils present in most cases.
