Kay Co.

Kay Co flint is one of the most widely used materials in the southcentral region of Kansas and Oklahoma. Center of use would be the quarry area located in north central Oklahoma near the border with Kansas. It was heavily used during all of the prehistoric time periods from Paleo through Mississipian. Raw material is an off white that will often show irregular tree ring type highlights of a darker tan. Much of the Kay Co chert was heat treated starting in the middle Archaic time period (Calf Creek) and it turns into a vibrant pink, cream with the darker red/pink ring pattern highlights. It is primarily opaque and seen in colors of white, off white, pink, red, and peach.
