Forakre Chert

Forakre chert is an interesting material ranging from a medium gray to dark gray in color. Raw material was probably utilized from large chunk type lenses. It is a formation in which large quantities of small crinoids and other small shell creatures became fossilized, becoming part of the material. The white fossils became an interesting part of the darker surrounding material in the chert. It was widely used in late Paleo through the Woodland periods with some usage in Mississippian times as well. Most highly seen concentration area would center around northeast to northcentral Oklahoma and extend into adjacent areas of Kansas. This is a sedimentary, opaque chert with good workability and was generally made into high usage utilitarian points and tools.
